California Reads: Life in the Camps
Have you ever been to the wonderful Japanese American Museum of San Jose in San Jose? My friends and I went a few months ago. On a late Sunday afternoon the museum wasn't crowded, and we had an informed and passionate guide. A major permanent exhibit at JAMSJ captures the mass removal and incarceration of some 120,000 Japanese Americans, two-thirds of whom were citizens of the United States. They were forcibly removed in 1942 and moved to 10 desolate permanent camps until 1945. The exhibit features an extensive collection of photographs, artwork, handicraft, and other artifacts from the camps, such as an actual wash basin, window, door and barbed wire from Tule Lake Segregation Center. I found the replica of some living quarters quite interesting.
Read "Farewell to Manzanar" by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston for a first hand account of one young Japanese American girl's experience in the camps. Make plans to attend a discussion by the author or, check out some of the various special library events celebrating California Reads.

Best Free Reference 2012
From Library Journal, here are some wonderful free reference resources available on the web: Best Free ReferenceThese are a few that caught my eye: GetHuman The web's largest database of customer service information for large companies in 50 countries. Find the best number to connect with an actual human being, or to leave a message with confidence.
Science Daily This site offers breaking news about various scientific endeavors around the world. View latest headlines like "Zombie-Ant Fungus Under Attack" or check out the "Top News" in medicine, technology or the cryptically named strange science category.
World Public Opinion A collective of public opinion research centers in 25 countries tries to give "voice to public opinion around the world" on issues of international concern. Search by region or topics including environment, human rights, security and trade. For example--how do Palestinians feel about the U.N.?
